Stay Alert: Protect Yourself from Smishing and Vishing Scams

    JN Group

Many of us now rely on emails and text messages (WhatsApp, SMS, DMs) to interact with others for business and personal matters. However, we can never be certain with whom we are communicating via these channels.

Remember, criminals are aware of the uncertainty all year round and may try to take advantage by posing as legitimate businesses, organisations, or people you know to gain your trust. They often use phishing tactics, casting their nets to steal your personal information.

Additionally, be mindful of phone calls or voice notes, as fraudsters may use a method called vishing to deceive you.

Smishing is another tactic that involves text messages containing harmful links. Clicking on these links can download malware on to your device that can use access your sensitive information and applications.

    Stay cautious and be vigilant!

    • Always be careful with any communication you receive. Look for red flags and inconsistencies in emails, voice notes, phone calls, or any interaction with individuals claiming to represent a business. If something feels off, verify before proceeding.
    • Do not share personal information even when communicating with a trusted individual. JN and its member companies will never initiate contact with members, or anyone, to request that they provide any credentials, including account number and personal information via email, text or phone call, and many companies have similar policies in place.
    • Don’t believe everything you see or hear – if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Be cautious when receiving unexpected messages or calls and even ads on websites and social media. If something looks or sounds even slightly odd or incredible, avoid engaging further.
    • Beware of pop-up ads, offers and campaigns shared with you or seen on social media. If you’re interested in an offer being advertised, contact the company directly through official channels. It may be an online scam.
    • Report suspicious communication to the relevant organisation or to the police.
